Raafe was dying. Taenya, Keston, and Mister Onas all knew it. She was sure that even Raafe knew it… if he was awake. Gwyn knew it, she really did. However, that did not stop her from hoping and praying to anyone listening that he would be okay. The world had an entire pantheon of gods—surely one would hear her. Right?

Taenya, Keston, and Mister Onas were all really kind and so willing to help, but Raafe had been different. He was her friend. He hadn’t treated her like a child, but rather as a person with her own thoughts and wants. Even though Gwyn knew she was still just a child, she felt seen and respected when he was around. Since arriving on Eona, and after the fight, she felt like more.

She had used actual, real-life magic. For real this time. It was both terrifying and amazing. But it meant that the knight’s wagon catching on fire was because of her. With the bandits, though, she had done it deliberately. She had created the spell and used it to save everyone—well, not everyone.

The thought made her sad again. If only she had not made Raafe need to save her. If only she had called to the magic sooner.

The first cast had been difficult; she’d had to think really hard. It’s why it took so long to help Raafe. The magic sang, and she listened. It was tricky at first, like quietly listening to the TV on the weekends when Mom was still asleep. The more she tried, the easier it got to hear it. She realized it was like listening to different types of music at once, but then one of them sang a little louder.

Finally, Gwyn told it what she wanted, and then the magic had listened to her.

The second time she threw the fire was much easier. It was like she knew what it was, just like in all of the fantasy shows she and her mom watched. A real [Fireball].

Everything seemed to get a little clearer after that. It took a while for her to realize exactly what she had done, and she didn’t mean with the magic—she had hurt them. Killed them. I wanted to. I was so… angry. They hurt him, stabbed him. And I just wanted them to burn.

Gwyn sniffled. She knew she should talk to someone, but who? Onas was kind, but he didn’t understand. He was too old. Taenya and Keston had been kind to her, but she didn’t want to burden them with her problems. She needed someone who understood her situation, someone who could help her understand her magic. Someone to just listen.

She longed for her mom. She felt so alone and scared. Mom always knew how to make things better and say the right things. Gwyn missed her so much.

Gwyn realized she had messed up really badly. She didn’t think Onas and Taenya would believe her when she joked about being a princess. Back home, everyone pretended to be a princess at some point.
